Georges Island

A tiny speck of land in the middle of Halifax Harbour. A place where not so long ago you needed to be invited to go and see. Since the summer of 2020, this is now partially open to the public and managed by Parks Canada. The off-limits parts are still under renovation and partially under reconstruction to make it safe for all.

Georges Island

Some parts are excluded as steep banks into purposely murdering ditches are to remain as they are. This is the island no vessel should pass if not expressly authorised. It is part of the Halifax Defense Complex.

Ditch photography

Lately, I have had plenty of things on my proverbial plate. Not so much food-wise, though. Photography takes a lot of space for me and will remain doing so. Not going to ditch photography…  No, these ditches are the ones on the side of the road. There are times when getting out on foot is not the best. Either because it is too hot or because it is too wet.

Skull

This week, we went from +37C to +13C overnight, with rain on the end of it. All in all not very conducive to walks outside. I know I will have to get used to this weather, but hey, a little bit of time for that, please!

The other Halifax

It’s easy to display any place as a tourist destination. Yet most places also have their business and their working sides. Halifax is no different. Halifax is not only about beaches and nice places for food and drinks. It is also a major port in Canada.

Container crane

So to portray it as only having a nice boardwalk, restaurants and sandy beaches close by, we’re missing that other part.

When fog horns sound

Last week I was startled by the sound of fog horns. Working late in my office, I had no idea what time it was or even what weather it was outside. Those horns started low and soft but soon got a lot louder. One glance outside and the reason was clear. Or rather, not clear at all. Fog or mist, the result was a magical environment with plenty of things “missing”.

UFOs are coming

So I grabbed my camera and left the apartment. The first view was the above one over the parking lot of one of the hospitals close by. I had already wondered why there were no helicopters flying in at this time of day.

City park

Pickings are slim when your movements are limited. Yet if you get into a city park in Canada, you will always find something to photograph. So, with no ideas in mind other than to get some fresh air, I left for a city park. It showed up on my GPS as a fairly big area.

Frog Pond

It turned out to be coverable from side to side in less than 30 minutes. At first that was a bit of a disappointment, but when it started to rain when I got back to the car… silver linings, eh? Smile
