Oven heat

A while ago, we went to the Ovens Natural Park. That was at a time when the temperatures were still reasonable. At least during the day. Somehow, I always find a way to go camping when the night temps drop to near freezing.

Inviting

That was no different this time. Happily, my sleeping bag is one I bought in Winnipeg and can resist until –20C.

Back to the Ovens. The Ovens is a privately owned park close to Bridgewater and Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. If you are in the area, don’t pass it up without visiting. The place is full of little Instagram-ready viewpoints.

Colourful suds

Colourful suds

It doesn’t really matter if the day is grey or sunny, this place is always colourful. I have been there when it was raining and the colours just scream at you. They come from the rocks, not from the vegetation.

The “caves” are not natural; they were man-made. Long ago, the rocks were checked for (and cleaned of) gold. The beach, or what’s left of it, was completely shipped off to Wales to be processed. The processed sands never came back and the beach is now just rocks and boulders.

Cunard’s Beach

You can imagine some gold flakes still sticking around; you can rent pans do do some of your own panning for gold to try your luck.

Thunderous sound in the right conditions

The caves produce different sounds. Since they are not natural, the sea hasn’t had the time to smooth them out. You can visit them using a kayak, rentable from the office of the park. Swimming is not recommended. Too cold, too far and too wild.

A swell sight

The views from the cliffs are nothing but spectacular. With fences dating from the last century (it seems), you get nothing of the current “fancy” metal vibes and over-protected feelings. If you really want, you can climb over them and live the rest of your life in a few seconds.

The Eastern Star

But before you contemplate such a move, just have a look at the vistas. With a little luck you can see the Eastern Star sailing by, coming from the port of Lunenburg.

Your choice of protection

All in all, if you have a day to spend in the area, get some time off and spend it at the Ovens Natural Park. It’s absolutely worth it. Once you’re done walking and gawking, the restaurant will be happy to welcome you as well.

Did I convince you to come and visit?

Until next time…
