A quiet start

After a tumultuous end of 2023, 2024 got off to a quiet start, photography-wise. The winter months in any country are often a bit limited in photo opportunities, even more, so if you are not moving around the countryside.

Risser's Park

Nova Scotia is a big enough province to have plenty of opportunities, though. It’s just that I can’t often take advantage of that.

It always seems that “something” is more important or urgent than going out to take pictures. Be that home improvement, breakdowns or the weather. While I don’t mind going out in a blazing snowstorm, I still don’t fully appreciate horizontal rain I don't know smile.

So when I do have some time to kill, the rain is there, and when the sun is out, I have things to do first. Usually, that takes just as much time as it takes for the sun to disappear. I guess we’ve all been in this situation numerous times. I can’t seem to get the organization right.

So, the pictures of the beginning of this year seem a little… meh to me. Yet the opportunities were there. So what happened then? Perhaps it’s the need for a vacation after all. Somewhere warm, somewhere without internet, phones, tablets or computers. Or clients, for that matter.

Just some time off, to rest and recharge. This post starts to look like a long complaint, but nothing could be further from the truth. I firmly believe (no research to back that up, so “believe" it is) that every photographer gets in this lull from time to time—a period where nothing seems interesting enough to go out and get the shot.

It’s when these periods start to follow each other closely that something needs to be done. I could do in-home photography, though. The cat, furniture, weird objects, macros, lighting setups, waterdrops, but nothing really triggers my inventive mind for that.

I have done water drop photography since the 1980s, with setups involving custom-made electronics to trigger the speedlight. A nice setup, but once you have done it, it’s done. I am kind of a hunter-gatherer of photographs, more than a grower/maker of them.

I guess that makes me officially a Paleolithic photographer. Nature always presents something new, as long as you can go out and find it. While the time to make New Year’s Resolutions is long gone, most of the resolutions have already been abandoned, one that I intend to keep is to get out more on foot, either for short walks or longer hikes.

There are plenty of places in Nova Scotia to take a hike, and I will have to make use of those trails this year. How I am going to pull that off is still a mystery to me, but hey, plans are there, so I can do something with that, right? At least I have hiking shoes already…

All I need now is the organization to pull this off. Let me know if you have any suggestions. I’m willing to pick you up from Halifax Airport to start a photographic journey through Nova Scotia.

Until next time…
