Along the Medway River

One of the rivers close to my place is the Medway River. The part I can easily visit and follow is largely untamed. White water in some places, quiet a few hundred meters away.

It also has a lot of little side streams, parts that split off from the main river and later recombine. It makes for a very interesting place to photograph.

I usually start my trip in a small place called Mill Village. From there, I follow the river as far as I can. The last time I did this drive, I was happy for the snow and ice on the road, filling the potholes of this unpaved road. Equally being thankful for a vehicle with All-Wheel-Drive.

This time, however, I found that the road had been put back in shape, most potholes were filled and the road was graded. It made for a much better ride.

Except for some reason, it was not faster. The “photographer’s road” is always 4-5 times slower than that same road for anyone else. I wonder why… Winking smile

Inviting, right?

This time, I drove the road at the very end of the fall colours. This year seems to have a mind of its own and forces me into shooting very little. I guess work and renovations take precedence over simple photography.

But it’s better late than never, so I finally found a moment to retake this drive. I was not disappointed. Stopping every few kilometres was not an issue on this very quiet road. I must say that the tourist season is over now and that very few people use the road.

That suits me fine, I can now stop anywhere on the side of the road and take my shots without causing havoc for traffic. Nobody to honk behind me, no screaming kids in search of the urgent ice cream, nothing… all nice and quiet.

See-through

See-through

The Medway River is flowing fast, there is no hope for anyone to take a boat, canoe or paddleboard and tame that stream. Many places look so “easy” for navigation, but they are fairly shallow. Then, barely a few dozen meters later, rocks stick up from the bottom, ready to shred your boat or canoe to pieces. Not a good place to be as far as I’m concerned.

Ancient activity

Ancient activity

To the side of the river, there are a few places that have had some activity. I can’t tell if this was some kind of dam for a channel or a simple little bridge at one time. Those reflections jumped up on me and I just had to shoot them.

A little further down the road (or up the road, I should say) was this little swampy area. Again, the fall colours were at the tail end of the season. Another week or so, or a bit of hard wind and all will be gone until spring.

This was a simple drive of some 50 km away from my place, the longest of it was to get back to the house over the highway.

Nova Scotia is full of these little gems and I intend to find more in the months to come.

Until next time…
